Mustang Sally Special For Kayakers
5:30pm / Aug. 23
Ten kayak enthusiasts who want to tune in to the MUSTANG SALLY concert Thursday from the cool waters of the Neuse River are invited to call Bert Statum at RIVERSIDE BICYCLES & OUTDOOR SPORTS (252-520-9400) to reserve, free of charge, their favorite water sports craft.
Statum plans to launch the kayak flotilla around 5:30 pm Thursday (Aug. 23rd) from the Neuseway Nature Center in time for the concert's opening song at 6:00 pm. The nature center lies directly across the river from Neuseway Park, site of the concert featuring the popular all-women ensemble.
The first known sighting of music fans paddling the Neuse to listen to a concert came July 26, 2007 when Lenoir County commissioners Earl Harper (right) and Paul Taylor with Rexcine Moore paddled to the Sand in the Streets concert featuring the Band of Oz. "We wanted to call attention to our river," Harper said, "and maybe we'll have a bunch more at the next concert." Taylor agreed. "The Neuse is one of our greatest assets," he said.

 |
VOLUNTEERS HEAD OUT--Some 80 volunteers from all over Kinston pose for a photograph as they prepare to pick up trash in downtown Kinston last October. Pride of Kinston's Design Committee and the Appearance Commission have decided to make Clean Up Day Oct. 6, 2007 as city-wide project. Local churches are being asked to serve as gathering places for neighborhood clean up platoons at 10:00am. At 12:30pm, participants are being invited to Pride of Kinston's offices as 327 N. Queen Street for a complimentary barbecue lunch and street music to celebrate cleanliness. |
Pride of Kinston will continue to be the anchor for the downtown effort. Volunteers are being asked to sign up. On a community-wide basis, neighborhood churches are being asked to be headquarters for clean up activities in their surrounding streets and blocks.
October 6 is the date for a state-wide Clean Sweep program, with an emphasis on cleaning up North Carolina's waterways. Kinston's program will include not only the Neuse but streets and neighborhoods as well.
Participants will be invited to come to Pride's offices at 12:30pm for a complimentary barbecue luncheon and to listen to some street music. Call 522-4676 to volunteer.
The objective of Community Clean Up Day is to call attention to the need to keep our town clean and neat while we pick up some trash.
